There are two endings in One Quiet Tree, in the same way that there are two ways to end a conversation: you can leave something growing, or you can clear the ground. Everything else is a shade.
The first is what I think of as the living grove. The tree survives, and the meadow becomes more than it was. Saplings take root. Birds arrive. The village finds a reason to gather. But even this ending has variations. A grove can be generous, or it can be lonely. A tree can be saved and still be distant. A caretaker can do the right things for reasons that never become kindness.
The second ending is the clearing. The tree is cut, sold, abandoned, or simply worn down by a season of inattention. There is no explosion. The meadow goes quiet. The final page shows you the stump, the village, and the weather that continues anyway.
No single meter
A single karma bar would have been easier. It would also have been a lie. The game tracks care, harm, and neglect as separate currents, then reads them beside the state of the tree, the meadow, and the village.
- Care is not just watering. It is pruning at the right moment, leaving tall grass for insects, planting in good soil, and sitting still long enough to notice.
- Harm can be deliberate. The axe is always available. But harm can also be casual: a shake repeated until it becomes a shiver, a mown meadow with nowhere left to hide.
- Neglect is the third current. It is not a choice you make in a menu; it is the weather you leave the tree to meet alone.
The final summary names your tree, then describes the tree, the meadow, and the village in three short passages. It shows the marks that remained: rings, saplings, birds, scars, the village's regard. Then it shows your karma as a sentence about the kind of attention you paid, not a grade.
The endings are not rewards and punishments. They are portraits. The question is whether you recognize the person who made them.
A second spring
One of the variations only exists for players who harm the tree and then change course. I will not spoil how it is triggered, but it matters to me that the game has one. Most of us are not consistent. We are careless on Tuesday and tender on Friday. A season is long enough to contain a correction.
The summary is designed to be read, not optimized. You can play again and try a different relationship with the same patch of ground. The tree will not be the same tree, because you will not be the same person at the start. That, more than any unlock, is the reason to return.
